The Illinois Shared Learning Envrionment (ISLE) hosts the ISLE Open Education Resources (IOER) system with the goal of helping teachers connect with learning resources and each other.

IOER Learning List Help & Information

The IOER Learning List Tool provides quick and easy access to a Learning List. A Learning List is any organized group of resources and/or files, often in a sequential order. It can be as small as a lesson or as large as a curriculum. It can be constructed by a user or team of users, and has several features, including:

  • Allowing users to browse every detail of the Learning List
  • Restricting access to assessments and answer keys
  • Sharing the Learning List directly or as a widget on your website

Day 3: Confirmation and Other Biases

Description

This is the first of two lessons that explore the ways in which biases affect news and information—how news is created and reported (by journalists and others) and how we interpret it. The lesson begins with an activity that helps students experience confirmation bias firsthand. Then, students gain context for their experience by hearing from experts about how confirmation bias operates in all of us. Finally, we set the stage for the ongoing discussion about the challenges of separating fact from fiction by listening to a National Public Radio story about efforts to correct rumors and fake news.


Learning Goals:

  • Students will be able to define and understand explicit, implicit, and confirmation bias.
  • Students will be able to examine why people sometimes maintain their beliefs in the face of information that refutes them.

Summary

Essential Questions: How can people have vastly different understandings of the basic facts of a situation? What is confirmation bias and how does it relate to our implicit biases?
