The Illinois Shared Learning Envrionment (ISLE) hosts the ISLE Open Education Resources (IOER) system with the goal of helping teachers connect with learning resources and each other.

IOER Learning Set Help & Information

The IOER Learning Set Tool provides quick and easy access to a Learning Set. A Learning Set is any organized group of resources and/or files, often in a sequential order. It can be as small as a lesson or as large as a curriculum. It can be constructed by a user or team of users, and has several features, including:

  • Allowing users to browse every detail of the Learning Set
  • Restricting access to assessments and answer keys
  • Sharing the Learning Set directly or as a widget on your website

Grade 10 - Earth Systems Evolution

This activity, which is aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts, introduces students to scientific knowledge and language related to Earth Science. Students will read content-rich texts, visit the David S. and Ruth L. Gottesman Hall of Planet Earth and use what they have learned to complete a CCSS-aligned writing task, creating an illustrated text about how Earth’s systems and life on Earth co-evolved to create an oxygen-rich atmosphere.

Aligned Standards

Major Standards

  • 10. By the end of grade 10, read and comprehend history/social studies texts in the grades 9—10 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
  • 2. Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary of how key events or ideas develop over the course of the text.
  • 7. Integrate quantitative or technical analysis (e.g., charts, research data) with qualitative analysis in print or digital text.
  • 2. Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.
  • 8. Gather relevant information from multiple authoritative print and digital sources, using advanced searches effectively; assess the usefulness of each source in answering the research question; integrate information into the text selectively to maintain the flow of ideas, avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
  • 9. Draw evidence from informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
  • Analyze geoscience data to make the claim that one change to Earth's surface can create feedbacks that cause changes to other Earth systems.
  • Develop a model based on evidence of Earth's interior to describe the cycling of matter by thermal convection.
  • Plan and conduct an investigation of the properties of water and its effects on Earth materials and surface processes.
  • Develop a quantitative model to describe the cycling of carbon among the hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.
  • Construct an argument based on evidence about the simultaneous coevolution of Earth systems and life on Earth.
