This unit is based upon the picture book Burro's Tortillas by Terri Fields, a Southwestern adaptation of The Little Red Hen chosen by the Albuquerque teachers for its relevance to their students' cultural experiences. The unit was created for use with first-grade English language learners. Activities include a lesson on Spanish words that appear in the story, a "realia" walk, interactive readings, and a cooperative paragraph.
