Forces and Winds is one of several online guides produced by the Weather World 2010 project at the University of Illinois These guides use multimedia technology and the dynamic capabilities of the web to incorporate text colorful diagrams animations computer simulations audio and video to introduce topics and concepts in the atmospheric sciences The purpose of this module is to introduce pressure how it changes with height and the importance of high and low pressure systems In addition it introduces the pressure gradient and Coriolis forces and their role in generating wind Local wind systems such as land breezes and sea breezes are also introduced This guide is split into sections which also cover topics such as geostrophic winds gradient winds how friction affects winds boundary layer winds and more
