This is a profile of the celebrated Elizabethan poetplaywright William Shakespeare As well as his famous plays he was the author of many poems including "Venus and Adonis" 1593 and "The Rape of Lucrece" 1594 More famous than these long poems Shakespeare's muchloved sonnets were composed between 1593 and 1601This page is part of the Academy of American Poets Web site The Academy was founded in 1934 to support American poets at all stages of their careers and to foster the appreciation of contemporary poetry The site currently includes biographies photos and other information on more than 400 poets with new pages being added all the time
