Bugscope

Description

The Bugscope project is an educational outreach program that allows students to remotely operate a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to image 'bugs' at high magnification. The microscope is actually located at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and is remotely controlled in real time from a classroom computer over the Internet using a web browser. An online application and advanced scheduling is required, and classrooms may submit their own samples for viewing. The website features set-up instructions and technical requirements for operating a session on the SEM, an instruction manual on online operation of the SEM, and introductory information on insects. There is also an online gallery of 3D and false color images of insects, spiders, and other 'bugs'.
